Next, request a duplicate title from the Illinois Secretary of State. There’s a small state fee, and processing typically takes about 1–4 weeks. You can usually do this by mail, online, or in person at a local Driver Services facility in areas like Elgin, Champaign, or Bloomington. 3. While you wait, confirm safe tow access without keys

Potential complications to watch for
Title still in someone else’s name (old owner, family member, lender)
Tip: If the Illinois title was never transferred into your name or there’s a lienholder listed, the Secretary of State may not issue a duplicate directly to you.
